The Pendleton Round-Up: The Rodeo Legacy Behind Pendleton® Whisky

It all began in 1910. The Pendleton Round-Up, that is. Now, it would be easy to understand getting the Pendleton Round-Up and Pendleton® Whisky mixed up; after all, we’re strongly connected, and not just in name.

Since its inception, the Pendleton Round-Up has established itself as the most prestigious and well-attended rodeo in America, drawing 50,000 people every year, who come from far and wide to bear witness, revel in cowboy culture, and celebrate the unshakable grit of the American West. Named for the town of Pendleton, Oregon, the Round-Up is an annual event we look forward to as it’s a chance to honor the men and women who embody the Western way of life.

Pendleton® Whisky was established in 2003 to honor the Pendleton Round-Up, providing hardworking cowboys and cowgirls with a whisky they can call their own. Every bottle of Pendleton® Whisky is infused with Western heritage, the cowboy spirit, and the century-old tradition of the Pendleton Round-Up. Each bottle is emblazoned with the Let’er Buck logo—a silhouette of a bucking bronco and rider—symbolizing the rodeo champions who personify the strength, rugged determination, and traditions we hold so dear.

The Round-Up Origin Story: How it All Began

The first Pendleton Round-Up was planned as a frontier exhibition, drawing 10,000 people over four glorious days in September 1910.

Visitors marveled at exhibitions of horsemanship and cowboy skills like bronc riding, bull riding, steer wrestling, and calf roping, plus traditional dancing, leather work, beadwork, horsemanship, and demonstrations from local indigenous tribes.

Unlike other Western shows of the time, the Pendleton Round-Up featured actual working cowboys whose business was to drive, rope, and brand cattle, and break wild horses. These were exciting, high-stakes performances, the best of the best, riding high-quality livestock, putting on fast-paced demonstrations, and providing people with a thrilling spectacle like no other.

Today, the Pendleton Round-Up has evolved into a week-long immersive event, celebrating Western heritage with parades, pageants, concerts, horse races, tribal dances, and more.

Pendleton® Whisky and Rodeo

Much like the Pendleton Round-Up itself, Pendleton® Whisky was born of tradition and cowboy culture, with Western roots that run deep into our local history.

It’s only fitting for the hardworking Western folk to have a whisky that honors their legacy. Pendleton® Whisky is known as a well-earned reward at the end of a long day, but it’s also an invitation to gratitude for all that’s good in life.

Whisky has been the spirit of choice for cowboys since the gold rush days, although it wasn’t always as reliable in quality and flavor as it is today. Back then, whisky was like the Wild West itself: untamed, unhinged, and hard-edged, but then again, cowboys were never shy about taking their chances.

Today, Pendleton® Whisky is proud to be the official whisky of the Pendleton Round-Up, ensuring our cowboys of a drink befitting their fortitude and tenacity and providing Westerners and Western enthusiasts with a spirit all their own.

That’s right; even though it celebrates the rodeo, Pendleton® Whisky ain’t just for cowboys. Anywhere friends gather, anywhere you roam, Pendleton® Whisky is right at home.

Pendleton® 1910 Bourbon and Pendleton® 1910 Rye honor the inaugural year of the Pendleton Round-Up. Whether you prefer your whisky neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, these easy-sipping whiskies are the best way to toast, “Here’s mud in your eye!”

If you love a good whisky cocktail, you’ll be happy to know that Pendleton® Whisky is one of the most versatile spirits you’ll find. From a hot Cowboy Coffee to the long, cool Original Cowboy, we’ve got some rodeo-inspired whisky cocktails to help you get your buck on.

Experience the West’s most celebrated rodeo and enjoy a glass of Pendleton® Whisky in honor of the cowboy spirit.
