Knot up your bull rope, it’s just about Pendleton Round-Up time! September 9-16, 2023 (which includes all the pre-kickoff festivities) marks the 113th installment of the world famous rodeo in the Wild West.
“Let’er Buck!” has been the motto since the inaugural event in 1910 and you can be sure this is a highlight of our year, sharing a name and a hometown with them and all. There’s one question we get asked a lot this time of year: “What are your favorite rodeo-inspired whisky cocktails?” Well, whether you’re lucky enough to be there in person or watch on the live stream, you can definitely enhance your experience with the right whisky pairing for rodeo watching.
Saddle up, cowboys and cowgirls, here’s how the pros do it—here are five of our favorite Pendleton® Whisky rodeo party drinks.
Breakfast Beginners
Rise and shine, it’s time to start your morning right. Make yourself some eggs, bacon, potatoes, mix in a couple tortillas—then wash it all down with our favorite rodeo day cocktail:
COWBOY COFFEE
- 1.5 oz Pendleton® Whisky Original
- 2 oz hot coffee
- 0.75 oz butterscotch schnapps
- Fresh whipped cream
- Combine the first three ingredients in a coffee mug & stir well, garnish with whipped cream.
Midday Mavericks
Midday sun makes for thirsty work whatever it is you’re doing—you need something refreshing to cool yourself down. This frosty feller can help:
COWBOY COLADA
- 2 oz Pendleton® Whisky Original
- 2 oz pineapple juice
- 0.5 oz coconut cream
- 1 pineapple wedge
- 1 cherry
- Combine the first three ingredients in a shaker over ice & shake well, pour into a rocks glass and garnish with fruit. Or, blend with ice for a real cool down.
Suppertime Sippers
Just because the chutes are shut doesn’t mean the Pendleton Round-Up party is over! Suppertime is a fine time to go “On with the Show!”:
RODEO JULEP
- 2 oz Pendleton® Whisky 1910 Rye
- 2 oz pomegranate juice
- 0.5 oz simple syrup
- Fresh mint
- Combine the first three ingredients in a shaker over ice & shake well, pour over rocks into a glass and garnish with mint
After-Party Poppers
Nighttime is when the action really heats up. Head over to your favorite watering hole and keep riding the party vibe into the wee hours with these rodeo-themed whisky highballs:
1910 WHISKY FIZZ
- 2 oz Pendleton® 1910 Rye
- 1 oz fresh lemon juice
- 0.5 oz simple syrup
- 3 oz club soda
- 1 lemon wedge
- In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine Pendleton® 1910, lemon juice and simple syrup until blended & shake well. Pour over club soda into a highball glass and garnish with lemon.
THE ORIGINAL COWBOY
- 1.5 oz Pendleton® Whisky Original
- 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice
- 0.5 oz simple syrup
- Soda water
- 1 lemon wheel
- 1 cherry
- Combine the first three ingredients in a shaker over ice & shake well, pour over rocks into a highball glass, then top with soda water and garnish with fruit.
